Prayer for insomnia?

I am having trouble sleeping tonight. The past few nights, I 've gone to sleep and then woken up around 3 am and not fallen back asleep until almost morning, and then it isn't even a sound sleep, more of a semi conscious dreaming. Tonight I can't fall asleep period. Bear is snoring and Younger has decided to have a bad dream. .......

Younger is asleep again, but I still can't get to sleep....

Anyway, I remember a prayer from "A Man for All Seasons" Now, I doubt that St. Thomas More actually used this prayer, but it always sounded good for nights like these:

"Dear Lord, give us rest tonight, or if we must be wakeful, cheerful. Careful only for our soul's salvation. For Christ's sake. Amen."

Anyone know if there is a patron saint against insomnia ?- just curious.

UPDATE:
I actually did some googling and did find a prayer for sleep:

Dear God,
As I lie here seeking another good night of restful sleep,
give me the peace of mind and the ability to relax.
Fulfill my needs for mental and physical restoration
so I may wake up ready for another beautiful day
which I hope You will allow me to live to enjoy
with praise and thanks to You .
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
One God forever and ever. Amen.

********
In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for Thou alone, O Lord, dost make me to dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8

Cited from Dr. Helio Lemmi- Neurology. with additions by me.
Well that's it - it's 12:30 a.m. and Good Night to all.

Edit:  More prayers here

I can't seem to sleep much at all and this has been going on for several months. I saw a doctor and have medicine but it doesn't seem to work. I would really love to have a peaceful night's sleep. I appreciate anyone's prayers for me and I will do the same for you.

The last two commenters, may I suggest that you give God some instruments in helping to get you to sleep and relieve your anxieties and fears. I suggest God may wish to work through other human beings. See a Doctor.

It is one thing to have insomnia, but it is another to have anxiety induced insomnia. Treat the anxiety, which in my case was caused by an imbalance of my seratonin- which also affects sleeping, and the insomnia will take care of itself.

After months of not sleeping due to anxiety I finally listened the answer I kept getting when I prayed saying :Go see the Doctor I wish to work my miracle through him.

Look,to not sleep because sleep just won't come is 1 thing but for depresion&anxiety go see a doctor

Oh and if you have been to the doctor keep in mind that deopending on how long you've had the underlying condition, it could take upto 2 or 3 months for the meds to kick in.

This may not be the quick relief you want but it may be the way God wants to work.

God bless you all, and for those who need to see a doctor may God grant you the grace and blessing that you find a cure and may the treatments work.

I once spent a whole YEAR not sleeping. Fear and anxiety gripped me. By the time I agreed to the answer I kept hearing in my prayers, as I said above, I was at the end of my tether. And like one commenter above I was put on meds and honestly the first two weeks things were actually worse, I went to the doctor andhe made and an adjustment. Then it seemed like nothing was changing until one night I just fell asleep. My first night asleep after 4 months on meds and I wake up in the middle of the night in a worry- it was a valid concern, but .

I remember crying to God and saying: Okay, I know that this is important, and I should be concerned about this, but right now I need to sleep. So I am givng YOU my worryies, I am asking YOU to worry for me so I can sleep and in the morning Dear Lord, you may give me the worry back, if you want to.

YOu know God never did give me back that particular worry. Over the next 10 years I learned that my anxiety is seasonal, so my doctor and I have worked out a schedule of when I should start my meds and when I can wean off.

Use the doctor, it why god created the profession, and if the first treatment doesn't work or doesn't make you feel right tell your doctor. He'll adjust thr treatment.

Again God bless you all

I have severe insomnia which I've had for 8 months now, resulting in bouts of depression and lethargy, where I can't sleep For 1-2 days, then I sleep for 1 day and can't sleep again. When it goes away I sleep but very badly as if I didn't sleep at all. Then it comes back again. I've tried everything and thought I would go insane. This happened to me because of a medical condition which I still have. I've tried all sorts of therapy, prayers, and have shed many tears. I keep trying to this day to get healed, but its a painfully slow process which keeps coming back all the time. I need a miracle cure.

Ok. firstly let me say that I would never say to anyone not to take medication. I will, however, share my experience on the matter.
As far as sleep issues are concerned, at one stage, was prescribed powerful sleeping tablets. I found them to be useless because my mind was restless, irritable, and discontented. The other thing I was prescribed for over 20 years was very powerful antipsychotics. I also chained smoked for over 20 years.
I personally came to a cross-road.
Either God was everything or He was nothing. Either God spoke the truth in His Holy word or He was a liar.
You see I came to know the truth and the truth has set me free.
The truth is that they were false gods. And as soon as I repented, trusted God and Believed Him, I was delivered!!. Exod. 20v3. Heb.4v12. Prob. 3v5. 1 Peter 5v7. II Timothy 1v7. Eph 6v12. Again Spiritual Warfare!!

Hi Everyone,

I've suffered from insomnia on and off for around 10 years. Lately, I've been using meditation to allow me to feel calm, even if I am wakeful during the night. I listen to guided meditations on the iPad during the night and I also practice deep breathing while I listen. This has helped quite a bit. I've also used sleeping tablets in the past, with some success.
However, recently I've started to pray that I'll return to sleep! I just use my own, simple words when I pray. I say something like "Dear God, please help me to sleep..." And it's working like a charm! I seem to fall back to sleep quickly and easily with prayer. I can't believe how well this has been working for me. I just wanted to share my experience.

I have been having insomnia for the past 2months at first I started taking lexotan it was working for me but later it stopped I moved to a cough syrup and right now my body got dependant on the cough syrup I couldn't sleep without the drug. I was ashamed of going to hospital to see a doctor, then I decided to look for help on the Internet I searched and searched I didn't see anything that could be of help to me I decided to look for help in a spiritual dimension and I came across this page and the prayer I said to myself oh this is what you need, at night I said the prayer before I could finish the prayer I felt a strong urge to sleep but couldn't sleep I said the prayer the 2nd time after the prayer something strange happened to me I didn't know when I slept off till 6.30am the following day. I can proudly say the prayer worked for me.

I have had insomnia on and off for many years, sometimes prayers work especially the rosary, but it can be boring if i had said it during the day, sometimes i will not finish, . Right now I have issues of grief and loss which have resurfaced, and it is more frequent. I'll have to add more prayers through out the day, let me see how it works.
