Painting of the Ascension

While going over the website for St Patrick's Basilica in Ottawa, which I mentioned here, I found this painting of the Ascension, which I meant to post yesterday.

This is one of two large paintings flanking the high altar of St Patrick's, both of which were painted in the style of Murillo, by nuns from Quebec in 1929.  That nuns painted these was a little surprise.  I had heard many times of nuns sewing gorgeous banners, vestments and cloths, but I had never heard of nuns painting before.  I suppose I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was.

I'll have to stop in and have a look at this church, next time I am in Ottawa.
