PRESENTATION OF "SPE SALVI," THE POPE'S NEW ENCYCLICAL

- The new Encyclical of Benedict XVI, "Spe salvi," will be presented in the Holy See Press Office at 11.30 a.m. on Friday, November 30. The document will be presented by Cardinal Georges Marie Martin Cottier O.P., pro-theologian emeritus of the Pontifical Household, and by Cardinal Albert Vanhoye S.J., professor emeritus of New Testament exegesis at the Pontifical Biblical Institute.

This would seem tobe at odds with newspaper stories circulating like the one below: Even if they got the date wrong hopefully, they maybe right about the treatment of the subject matter.

Il Papa firmerà il prossimo 30 novembre, festa di Sant’Andrea, la sua seconda enciclica, che sarà dedicata alla speranza. Lo ha annunciato ieri sera il segretario di Stato vaticano, card. Tarcisio Bertone, confermando voci ricorrenti sull’imminente pubblicazione del nuovo testo pontificio (il Segretario di Stato vaticano era intervenuto a Roma al Congresso Mondiale degli organismi operanti per la giustizia e per la pace).

On November 30, the feast of Saint Andrew, the pope will sign his second encyclical, which will be dedicated of hope (Tr. note: it will speak on the subject of hope, it's subject is hope). The Secretary of State for the Vatican Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone announced yesterday, confirming the current rumours of the imminent publication of the new pontifical text (the Vatican's Secretary of State was interviewed in Rome at the World Congress of Workers Unions for Justice and Peace).

Dopo la firma ci vorranno ancora alcune settimane prima che il documento, in latino nella sua versione originale, arrivi al grande pubblico: dovrà essere tradotto in italiano e, almeno inizialmente, in inglese, francese, spagnolo, tedesco. Il Vaticano sembra intenzionato a stringere i tempi per diffondere la nuova enciclica nel periodo di Natale, il simbolo dei simboli della speranza.

After the signing, it will still be several weeks before the document is widely published. The Original Latin version must be translated, at least initially, into: English, French, Spanish, and German. The Vatican seems intent to time the release of the document with Christmastide - the symbol of the symbols of hope.

Significativa anche la data in cui il Papa apporrà il proprio autografo al testo: Sant’Andrea, che si festeggia appunto il 30 novembre, fu il fratello maggiore di Pietro, divenne – secondo la tradizione – il primo vescovo di Bisanzio (chiamata poi Costantinopoli) ed è patrono della Russia, dell’Ucraina e della Romania. Un omaggio esplicito all’antico cristianesimo orientale e all’attuale mondo ortodosso.

Even the date on which the Pope will sign the text is significant: Saint Andrew, whose feast is celebrated on November 30, was St. Peter's elder brother and became - according to tradition - the first bishop of Byzantium (then-called Constantinople) and is Patron of Russia, the Ukraine and Romania; is an explicit homage to Old Eastern Christianity and to the actual Orthodox World.

Bertone non ha dato ulteriori dettagli sui contenuti del nuovo pronunciamento di Benedetto XVI. Da indiscrezioni,il titolo dovrebbe essere «Spe Salvi», ovvero «Salvi grazie alla speranza» e sarà una meditazione che prenderà spunto dagli scritti di San Paolo che, nella lettera ai corinzi, definì la speranza, insieme alla fede e alla carità, una delle tre virtù teologali del cristianesimo. Quello della speranza è tema che ricorre spesso nelle riflessioni di Papa Ratzinger.

Cardinal Bertone gave no other details on the content of the new pronouncement from Benedict XVI. From rumours (Lit. indiscretions) the title should be "Spe Salvi," or "Salvation thanks to Hope" (Tr. Note: "Hope Saves") and will be a meditation that springs from the writings of Saint Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, in which he defined hope with faith and chairty, one of the three theological Christian virtues. The theme of Hope appears often in Pope Ratzinger's reflections.

«Dinanzi a un panorama mutevole e complesso come quello attuale – ha detto di recente Benedetto XVI – la virtù della speranza è sottoposta a dura prova nella comunità dei credenti. E tuttavia, proprio l’attesa fiduciosa in Dio è la virtù – ritiene Ratzinger – che consente ai cristiani di non farsi travolgere dal pessimismo, dal nichilismo, dai fallimenti umani».

"Before a mutable and complex panorama like that of the actual(reality) - Benedict XVI said recently - the virtue of hope is subjected to harsh trials in the community of the faithful. And yet, this actual waiting, faithful in God is the virtue- holds Ratzinger- that allows Christians not to be swept away by pessimism, nihilism, and human failures."

In opposizione a Nietzsche, che la definì una «virtù dei deboli», Papa Ratzinger indica la speranza come una delle pietre angolari della vita cristiana.

Countering Nietsche, who defined it (hope) as one of the "virtues of the weak", Papa Ratzinger defines hope as one the the cornerstones of Christian Life.

All’enciclica il pontefice ha lavorato soprattutto durante le sue vacanze estive a Lorenzago di Cadore e a Castel Gandolfo , facendo poi gli ultimi ritocchi una volta rientrato nel Palazzo apostolico.

The Pontiff worked on most of the encyclical during his summer vacation in Lorenzago di Cadore and Castel Gandolfo, then making the final edits when he returned to the Apostolic Palace.

La stesura di questo testo ha avuto il sopravvento su un’altra enciclica che il Papa aveva in programma: un documento dedicato ai temi sociali, che forse apparirà nella prossima primavera.

The drafting of this text had as its precursor another encyclical that the Pope had planned: a document dedicated to social themes, that may appear next spring.

La prima enciclica del Papa, pubblicata il 25 gennaio 2006 (firmata il 25 dicembre 2005) era dedicata all’amore di Dio. In quel testo, dal titolo «Deus caritas est», Ratzinger ragionava sull’amore, «una delle parole più usate e anche abusate», e cercava di dare un volto alla carità, a cui richiamava tutta la Chiesa.

The Pope's first encyclical, published 25 January 2006 (Signed 25 December 2005) was dedicated to the love of God. In that text, entitled "Deus Caritas Est" , Ratzinger reasoned that charity(love), is "one of the most used and abused words," and searched to give a facet to charity(love), to which he called the whole Church.
