A friend asked me to submit some articles to a periodical by the name of Fidelitas he was loosely connected with. I did some rework on a pair of my older writings, and sent them in, blithely ignoring the fact that they were close to double the maximum length.
That was a couple of months ago. I just assumed they were rejected.
I got word earlier this week that at least one of the articles will be published. There are three possibilities that I can tell:
1. I am so darn good they decided to overlook the length problem and made room for me.
2. They were short on submissions and needed some verbiage to cover the lack.
3. They took a machete to my piece.
Naturally, the pay is in 'exposure'.
Still, it's been a while since I have had anything published, and it's nice to see my work in print. The last one was a while back, and I was published in Legion Magazine. I sent in one of my Dad's war stories and got it published in their humour section. They did take a machete to my story, and published a paraphrase rather than my actual words. Still paid me fifty bucks for it. I believe that made me one of the better paid Canadian writers for that year.
I have no idea which of the two pieces I sent in are to be published. I'll have to wait until I get a copy.
And here's a shameless plug where I mention that I have self published some of my longer works and have a page up at Amazon: here.
