"The Spirit of our Troops is Excellent."

Part of the soldier's daily rations in WWI was a dose of rum. The officers or sergeants were charged with seeing that every man (except for the teetotallers) got theirs. Getting their hands on the rum jar (like the fellow pictured below) was the dream of many a soldier. The rum jar often appeared in these comics, showing that it was an important part of the life of the soldier in the war.
