I really have no idea what to say about such horrors. Pray for all.
Jack Layton
Jack Layton, leader of the opposition, has cancer.
I was against him and his policies in the last election. I said I wouldn't vote for the man. That doesn't mean I want him dead. Those who are moved, pray for him.

Out for a few days.
Out of touch and not blogging for a few days. Here's a few quick hits.
Bishop in charge of liturgy in Toronto wants parishes to pick from just four Mass settings of the new missal. This wouldn't be a problem, if any of the choices were either singable by congregations, or any good.
Pray for the soul of the Ontario police officer who died in the line of duty this morning.
Should I ever win the lottery, I will buy one of these cars.
And one of these guns.
On the other hand, probably not. These are cool things, but in the end, they are just things. I don't even own a gun, though, if I did, this would be a cool one to own. But that's the thing. The temptation to blow a ton of money on stuff like this is probably one of the reasons why I am better off poor.
The Pope now tweets. The wired in faithful can now get their daily dose of vitamin BXVI.
Feel free to vote in my poll.
Happy Canada to the Canadians. Happy Fourth to the Yanks. True fact: During the Klondike Gold Rush, thousands of Americans flooded into the Yukon. When it came to celebrating our national holidays, the 1st and 4th of July, rather than coming into conflict over the holidays, they turned it into a four day blow out, in which every one took part.

My sister, of whom I have written before, has descended even further into depression. It's very, very bad.

Prayer Request
I visited my family on the weekend. My sister was there, with her child. She looks as though she is at the end of her rope.
Her husband is nice guy, but unfortunately he has chosen a long, slow suicide. His principle vice is smoking, and he smokes a lot. "I just love it," he says. He has destroyed his lungs, and has emphysema. He also has sleep apnea, but refuses to use his CPAP machine. "It makes too much noise. I can't sleep when it's on," he says. He has a host of medical conditions. His feet and legs swell up. His blood is so thick, they actually can't take samples with a needle. He has cancer on his bladder. He went to have an operation to remove the cancer, but he had an apnea episode on the operating table. His Oxygen levels were so low they stopped the operation at mid point, and the doctors now refuse to operate on him again, as he will not make it off the table.
However, her principle problem is her son. She wanted to have children all her life, but her first husband was sterile. She now has her son, and he has Asperger's syndrome. He is intelligent, but he has no filters. Anything he thinks of saying, he says. Anything he thinks of doing, he does. He embarrasses her in front of company. He puts himself into danger every opportunity that comes along. He has a temper that verges on the nuclear, and his fits last for hours. At my mother's house on Sunday he asked for a sandwich made of white bread, but she would only give him whole wheat, as she believes white bread is unhealthy. "I hate that!" he screamed at her. "Can't you do anything right, you imbecile?"
"Did he just call you an imbecile?" I asked.
"That's okay," she said. "He normally calls me a moron."
"And he's still ambulatory?"
She decided it was time to take him home, and he screamed and called her names, punched at her, while she tried to discipline him. She sounded exhausted and worn out.
Not surprisingly, she also suffers from depression. Her depression became so debilitating, she is now on long term disability, which means her pay has gone down. Her husband is completely out of work, and gets nothing from his work, so money is also very short.
In addition to this, there is also my brother. He is an alcoholic. For years he looked as though he was frozen in time. Now, every time I see him, he looks a little worse, like all those frozen years have caught up with him, and each of those years brought another one with it. He loves his nieces and nephews, and they love him in return, but he, too, is performing a long slow suicide. We've tried talking to him. He won't budge. He has been drunk pretty much since he was about sixteen, which means he's still a sixteen year old at heart, and never developed the coping mechanisms most of us do. A miracle may be his best shot. At the very least, Pray that he returns to church. He hasn't been, except for funerals , baptisms and first communions, for years. I fear for his soul, should he die in this state. And, while death is inevitable, for some it is more inevitable than others.

Prayer Request
A new baby, Puff's father is dying, and now this.
The day before Puff was induced there was a memo passed around work informing us that there was to be an all day meeting today. Because I was off on my five day paid parental leave, I didn't attend the meeting, although I have contacted some of the people who were there. The news was grim.
My department is facing severe cuts. At least one guy is gone. The rest of us, assuming I am offered the same deal as the others who were not removed, are given a choice: A severance package; one year at full pay while we wait on a priority list for new available positions (I checked the website for job postings. Normally there are about a dozen. There are now none.); we stay on at reduced hours- from 35 hours a week to 25, representing a 28.6% loss in wages. The changes will take effect October 25th.
One way or another I will be looking for some form of work soon, either as full time, or looking for part time work to make up the shortfall. Quite possibly I will be going back to the way it was before I finally got this job: working multiple part time jobs to try and get enough money to live. Meanwhile, my family will be growing up without me. I took this stupid job to avoid that.
Pray for the guy who was let go. Pray for my family. Pray for me.

Sill waiting, part 6.
Still at work, still waiting. No false labour the last few days, though a few braxton hicks. Calm before the storm. Tomorrow is it. Unless she gets bumped because of an emergency, or she goes into labour today. We're all prepared for tomorrow.
Why do I get the feeling things won't quite go as planned?

I've been thinking about "pain management"
As the birth draws near, I have been thinking about pain associated with birthing.
With Elder, I got demerol, which I liked because it took the edge off, but I could still feel the contractions and I knew what was going on. It did make me sleepy but they managed to time the doses so that it all wore off by the time I had to push. It also allowed me to get some sleep between contractions.
When Younger was born, they stopped the demerol, and offered me an epidural early on. I told them I'd wait and see. By the time I wanted the epidural, the anesthesiologist was unavailable to give it to me. So I had no pain relief with younger, and I didn't have any way of hypnotising myself against the pain. That's not totally true - near the end they gave me nitrous gas(laughing gas) which did nothing for me.
Now, with the lad, I have the option of an epidural, morphine, nitrous gas, or nothing. They don't offer demerol anymore.
My major concern with the epidural is that I will move, and instead of the epidural space, the anesthesiologist hits the transdural, and at best I get a four day migraine headache. But there is less than a 1% chance of that.
The morphine is a narcotic, and my concern is the doses not being properly timed and the lad and I being too sleepy to push when the time comes.
And as stated earlier nitrous gas does nothing for me.
But, I find at times that when I pray I can put myself into a trance like state. Usually I can only do it for a few minutes and only with a short prayer or ejaculation, usually the Jesus Prayer:
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
But labour and delivery lasts more than a few minutes, so although I will be praying I am not good enough to put myself into a continual or continuous trance.
Bear says that if it were him he'd go for the epidural. I love him.

Still waiting, part 5
Another misfire. Never made it to the hospital. We had the usual doctor's appointment this morning, and he has made arrangements for inducement, so, unless labour starts soon, Puff will be induced on Wednesday.
On the upside, unless labour starts today, I will be able to see Doctor Who tonight, which can only be regarded as a Good Thing.
To answer LarryD's question: At the risk of dating myself very badly, for me, Tom Baker will always be the Doctor. Okay, that's not the question you asked. Just thought I would toss that in. Matt Smith is a good Doctor thus far, but the real heart and soul of this series thus far is Amy Pond. I also really liked the woman in the Weeping Angels two parter. Matt Smith's greatest strength thus far seems to be a willingness to occasionally step aside and let someone else carry the scene. That is a good thing.
The Daleks' episode did have some weaknesses, although I must admit I did like the whole Spitfires in Space thing, cheesy as it was. The Spitfire is the symbol of the War and Victory to the British, so they would have seen it as awesome, but what would have been even more awesome, in my humble opinion, is if they could have wrapped a few of those gravity bubbles around a couple of battleships, and floated the King George V and the Rodney and the Warspite up there. Flying battleships pointing their monster guns at a space ship and just pounding away would have been among the most awesomely awesome sights in the history of Scifi. (In truth and fairness, the Japanese already did this in Starblazers, but that was anime. This could have looked like the Real Thing.)
Back to the pregnancy, Puff is very uncomfortable and is having spasms and contractions off and on. Twice now they have become regular and steady, then faded. She wants this over and done with. It is entirely possible that the pregnancy will not last until Wednesday.

Prayer request
The doctors have told us that anyone wishing to see Puff's father one more time should go see him now. We managed to get him last rites on Monday. If anyone can say a prayer or two for him, it would be deeply appreciated.

Prayer Request
Puff's father was taken to the hospital today. He is undergoing a battery of tests. The doctor's told us he is likely to come home by the end of the week this time, but he has a series of underlying chronic conditions which will almost certainly entail future visits to the hospital.
UPDATE
My father was initially brought into the hospital for low blood sugar. But since then they've found his liver isn't functioning well; he has ascitis - basically his liver sweats, and his kidney function is so low they aren't clearing the extra water from around his abdomen.
I doubt the Emerg. doctor's prognosis that he'll be home by the end of the week.

In your charity, please pray for those who worship according to the Extraordinary Form of the Mass run byu the FSSP apostlate in Toronto. There is much bitterness over the recent decision to relocate Fr. Venette to Florida, and tomorrow will be his last Mass in Toronto. Pray that this situation may be resolved for the greater glory of God.

Prayer request for the dead.
I've just found out an old family friend died yesterday. He was actually the man who introduced my mother and father to each other. He was a good Catholic, and his heart was never far from the Church. He always looked forward to the re institution of the old rite, the extraordinary form. I offered to take him to an indult Mass years ago, but he was too ill to go.
His family always took care to prepare for everything and make sure everything was ready on time, to the point that the tombstone over family plot already has his and his surviving sisters' names on it, with only the final date to be filled in.
Please pray for the repose of his soul.
