Today at Mass
Nothing in particular happened. Puff was sick so I took the two kids by myself. Mass went as normal, little out of the ordinary there. What I did notice is that I no longer feel tense or irritable at the music, now that I am out of the choir. I can join in if they are playing a song that I like, and can close the book and put it down if it is one that I do not. I usually put the book down these days, but that's fine with me. I no longer have to lend my voice, and that's a relief.
Here's something, though: after Mass I was in the narthex when the choir came down. They walked past me, and not one said hello. I sang with them for five years.
Oh well.

Bear has left the building
I quit my last choir this week. The choir had reached the point I spoke of a few posts back: I couldn't stand the music, any of it. We were going over music for the next three weeks. In all that music, only two pieces had tunes written before 1970, and the verses to those tunes had been written in the 80's. I loathe the music, but the words get under my skin far worse. The words represent a closed circle theology- songs about us, songs sung to us, and God outside. The final straw? The opening hymn for three weeks from tomorrow was "Gather Us In." I closed my hymnal, put on my coat and left. I got home and sent a one line e-mail to the director: "I've decided to leave the choir."
I spoke to the director tonight, everything is fine between us. He told me there are a few choirs out there that sing more to my liking, but I am not looking for another choir at this point. I don't want to go church hopping for music. I just couldn't serve my parish in that roll any longer. I can't sell what I don't believe, and I do not believe that is the kind of music that should be sung in Church.
A few others have left the choir lately. They are down to a few very nice women now, some of whom can carry a tune. They have a paid soprano, who usually uses a mike. We have had quite a few volunteers come by for a few weeks and vanish. They give their reasons, all different reasons, but bottom line is, few are willing to make the sacrifice of time and energy to play that music at that church for that director.

This was in the comments box today, and I felt I would respond to it in a post, and invite others to have their say. A reader, Anonymous American, commented on the trouble he has been having with his parish choir, the priest and the congregation. From his description, he and I may work at the same choir. He concludes:
I too know the frustration of feeling a calling that cannot be fulfilled, or of being in possession of talents no one wants. I know what it means to suppress my true abilities because there is no demand for them. I speak not only of my time in Church and with the choirs, I speak of Life, my own. I know what it means to be more knowledgeable, to be better informed, to be more right than those who are in charge, and to watch them repeatedly make the wrong decisions, over my objections- simply because they are in charge, and I am not- and to know that they, or someone like them shall always be in charge, and I shall not. And I know disillusionment, and bitterness, and regret, and even despair. For a long time I have wrestled with these things. They are my constant companions.
Yet in spite of all this, I will stay the course to the best of my abilities. I have many reasons. First and foremost, Catholicism is the true Church of Christ- where else shall I go? Here reside the words of Truth and Life. Anywhere else, even with a better music program, is only second best.
Secondly, those of us who know better have a responsibility to teach those who don't, or to at least bear witness to those who don't. I believe I am the only one in my choir who knows about the GIRM, and Redemptionis Sacramentum, and Summorum Pontificum, and Tra La Sollecitudini, or who knows how to read neumes. Were I to leave, the number would go to zero- who then would help them, tell them the truth, or even just occasionally let them know there are ways other than their own?
You say at twenty two you don't expect to see any changes in your life time. At forty I have seen more changes than I ever would ever have thought possible. Some were good. Some were not. Some have not played out. I will see more, as will you. There are a lot of changes in the air right now- the recent motu proprio among them. It could be an extraordinary rite comes into being near you. It may need someone with experience in chant and polyphony. At any rate, if we leave, then our talents and gifts will not have a role in helping to shape the future.
Even so, I realize my endeavors will most likely end in failure. Such is the way. So be it. I take comfort in the wisdom of my betters, and here Mother Theresa's words come to me: "I was not called to be successful, but to be faithful." St. John of the Cross wrote: "We must do not that which is easy, but that which is difficult." Being Catholic is always difficult, but even so, I will not change.
I will remember you in my prayers.
I was optimistic when I took my job and all of last year, but after seeing the outright hostility the congregation has for good music, I think I'm just going to give up on Catholic music. I may wind up in a Catholic church later on, but it'd only be because nothing else is available (which is how I got my current job). My advice is to leave your parish if there's a better one, convert to protestantism (my route) or just accept that you're not going to see good Catholic music in your lifetime. I'm 22 and I doubt that I ever will.

Sliding downhill
My recent posts on the music at our church has lead to several questions asked. Rather than give several separate answers, I will describe something of the music program, such as it is, and how we got to this point.
There are two choirs at the church. The larger and superior is the choir for the 10:30 Italian Mass. Many of the members of that choir have been singing together for decades. They also have a few younger members coming up as well. The other Sunday Masses are generally served by a cantor and organ, or sometimes by the organist alone, who then provides the singing as well. Then there is the choir to which I belong, the noon Sunday choir.
I joined around the end of the recent ordinand's time as director. He was a good director, and played a fair variety of music. He was strict, insisted people be one time, and so on. He would also stop practice, and go after one or two people who were not getting the music, and would not proceed until they began to get it right.
His replacement was a relative of someone on the parish council. According to legend, the job was more or less handed to him, as no one else was interviewed. First thing of note: He was a piano player, not an organist. Secondly, in spite of his claim to "years" of vocal training, he showed no evidence and little inclination to share the fruit of his training. In contrast with the ordinand's insistence on technical proficiency, this one was constantly telling us to sing with feeling, and feeling was the order of the day. It was his constant refrain, and no other help was available from him. Third thing of note: he was a student; he was using the choir to pay his way through university, and he was coming to the end of his career as a student. I believe his field was marketing, or administration.
At first things were all right under him, but in retrospect, that was merely inertia from the ordinand's time. We were coasting, and there would come a time when we would stop. It began slowly. His choices of hymns became odder. He relied more and more heavily on modern pieces. We began playing the same music over and over again, relentlessly. By which I mean, we would play almost the exact same music for two or three weeks in a row. He had finished his time as a student, and was looking for a job. Practices were cancelled frequently. On several occasions I seemed to be the only person not told of the cancellation. The fact that I was coming the farthest to the practice only made it more irritating.
People had started to leave the choir. They all had good reasons. Busy. Work. Too far. Too late. And so on. People were no longer willing to make time in their schedule to sing this music. I was the last man, and I was on borrowed time. The last straw came when we began to prepare for Christmas. Unsatisfied with the meagre selection of Christmas music already approved by the Church, he brought in a piece that he really liked, called: Mary, didja know? He introduced it with words I never thought to hear a choir director say in church: "Kenny Rogers does a really great version of this!" I quit the choir on the spot. My last words to him were: "Are we singing for a Mass or a hootenanny?" He looked at me blankly. I don't think he knew what a hootenanny was. He later took a vote. The majority of the choir wanted to do the piece. It wasn't just him.
Through all this, I should add, we had a good soprano acting as cantor and choir leader. She was the backbone of the choir. She had been trained, unlike the rest of us. And, miracle, she was a volunteer.
Eventually he left. For various reasons, the church got two music directors: one for us, and one for everything else. I rejoined the choir in the hopes of improvement. A few other people joined up, including another man. Ours was an excellent organist- concert quality. He began by trying to introduce new music. There was a brief stretch where we were trying to learn the Gloria from Mozart's Missa Brevis, but that was soon quenched. I never found out why. Possibly we weren't good enough- very possibly. Possibly something else. We began to try and learn new Mass settings, but that got stifled mostly: It's Mass of Creation. Sometimes we are allowed to do something different, but not often.
Then the Soprano let us know she would be marrying and leaving. The director tried to find a replacement among the choir. During the summer months, when the soprano wouldn't be with us, he had a series of us try to do the cantoring for the Mass. I myself was one of them. He even allowed us to choose our own music. (My choices included Jesu Dulcis Memoria and the Gregorian Ave Verum Corpus). In the middle of all this, we had one woman who seemed to be a decent alto in choir try her hand. Her nerves got the better of her and she was a disaster. Shortly after that father cancelled that program, and decreed that only trained singers were alowed to cantor and sing the psalms. There weren't any. The organist took over that part, but he was not a trained singer. While his singing couldn't be said to be bad, it couldn't be said to be good either.
Somewhere in here another decision was made: anyone who wanted to sing in the choir could sing in the choir. We couldn't turn anyone away. We couldn't even turn away someone who had not come to practice if they showed up on Sunday to sing. Not that they were coming in droves, mind.
We also tried to sing the communion antiphon, just a small group of men. At first we weren't too bad. Then one of the men left, and two others came, who were not of the calibre of the first. Rock bottom was Easter Vigil. We hadn't had time to practice the antiphon at practice before- as our time had been taken by Holy Week Masses- so we went over it before Mass. I was the only one who had looked at it during the week. The two new men weren't getting it. The director was stumbling occasionally. I suggested we drop it. He insisted they would be okay for Mass. They weren't, and we stank. Shortly after that a new decision came down to us: No more antiphons, and no more chant. The other two men, for unrelated reasons, left the choir a few months later. Once again, I was the only male.
This year, the priest finally realized that another trained soprano volunteer was unlikely, and found the money to hire one. On the other hand, we are losing people still. All efforts to draw back the old members who came to the ordination failed. More decisions: the noon Mass will be best serviced by the music of Haas, Haugen, Schutte, et al. Father has been giving the director lists of music he would like to hear, and new songs. I have an idea he would have guitars up in the loft if he could, but I can't back that up. It just seems to be the direction.
Meanwhile, the Italian choir continues to sing traditional hymns and even sings in Latin. So the priest is not adverse to it per se. Simply put, he sincerely believes that the noon congregation is better served by the more modern folky pieces. That belief is carrying more and more force as time goes on.

Moscow Sretensky Monastery Choir
They are absolutely wonderful. I didn't understand a single word, but the acapella music was simply beautiful. At one point, someone hit a low D and my friend and I had our legs go weak.
One of their baritone, Dmitry Beloselsky, was soloist on a few pieces and he was perfection.
His voice is exactly as I imagine St. Michael's voice would be, when the Archangel sings. He was the soloist on the last piece of the performance, "Brother's, it's Good to Live," and he garnered the choir a standing ovation.
For the encore, they performed, what my friend said was the traditional hymn for the bride as the couple departs. 25 years ago she didn't have it at her wedding, because the choir was away that day, but she got to hear her hymn last night. She cried.
They sang in the acoustically perfect Toronto Centre for the Arts.
Their upcoming Tour Cities and Dates include:

What I'd Like to Start Hearing, What I Never Want to Hear Again, and What I Would Love to Continue Hearing, And What I Am in No Hurry to Hear
Taking my cue from BMP at Christus Vincit, I thought I'd go through our hymnal,
Catholic Book of Worship III, published by the CCCB.
I will concentrate first on hymns, then on Mass Settings and then on the Psalm settings, and finally other acclamations.

Meeting old acquaintances
Last week I ran into the old choir director for one of my choirs. He is currently studying to be a priest, and about to be ordained deacon. We spoke for a few minutes. I asked him for his opinion on the upcoming Motu Proprio. At first, he didn't know what I was talking about, but then he remembered that he'd heard something about it. "I don't think it will change much," he said. "Toronto has plenty of indult Masses, and there's enough to meet demand. Besides," he went on, "If you've ever seen the Mass you'd see how much preparation is involved. And all that Gregorian Chant just sounds horrible if it's done badly."
Now, for the first part, about demand for the Pian Mass, he may be correct. I do attend one of the Masses in Toronto, (and perhaps I should have been more up front and let him know that) and it is sparsely attended. But, I do know a few people who would attend but getting to the Mass is difficult for them. More Masses would be helpful for them, but how great this demand is overall, I do not know. My old parish was a fairly typical parish, and I imagine they would not have difficulty reaching thiry people who want the Pian Mass. By the same token, they wouldn't have much more than thirty either, and there's no way that priest could celebrate that rite.
As for his comment on the quality of Gregorian Chanting and the level of preparation required, there were several ways for me to respond to this. I could have said that Gregorian chant is the music mandated by Vatican II as the music proper to the Pauline Rite as well as the Pian Rite. I could have said the Pauline Rite is supposed to have a fair amount of preparation for it as well and is not supposed to be a slap-dash affair. What I did say was: "Can you name me a kind of music that doesn't sound horrible if done badly? Is that why we sing so much Haugen/Haas? It's lousy to begin with and bad singing won't make a difference?"
He laughed. "Haugen," he said, shaking his head. I have no idea what he meant by that, but at that point he had to leave.
I am curious to see what manner of priest this man makes. He was a capable director, and made an effort to perform a range of hymns, both old and new.
Just not Gregorian Chant.
